Jeff AtwaterJeff Atwater, Chief Financial Officer, The State of Florida

A fifth-generation Floridian, Jeff Atwater was elected Florida’s Chief Financial Officer in November of 2010. His commitment to public service began in 1993, when his hometown of North Palm Beach elected him Vice Mayor. Mr. Atwater was subsequently elected to the House of Representatives in 2000 and the Florida Senate in 2002, where he was unanimously selected to serve as Senate President in 2008. CFO Atwater’s priorities are to aggressively eliminate fraud that increases the cost of living, reduce regulations inhibiting job growth and economic expansion, expand his earlier efforts at fiscal transparency and governmental accountability, and protect the state’s most vulnerable citizens from financial harm and abuse.

Afternoon Keynote Speaker:

Stephen OwensStephen Owens, President, Swire Properties

Stephen Owens is a 30-plus year veteran of Swire Properties, Inc, one of the leading real estate developers in South Florida and a subsidiary of the Hong Kong-based Swire Properties Ltd. Prior to assuming his current role as President, Mr. Owens oversaw Swire’s commercial and residential investment portfolio totaling more than two million square feet.

Mr. Owens headed the master planning of Brickell Key in Downtown Miami, for which he spearheaded the construction of the award-winning Courvoisier Centre office complex, the three-tower Tequesta Point luxury condominium development, Courvoisier Courts, Courts Brickell Key, Carbonell and ASIA luxury condominium towers with a combined total of 2,120 units, and the JADE at Brickell Bay joint venture of 336 condominium residences. He directed the development of the Mandarin Oriental Miami, with its renowned five-star spa and Azul Restaurant.

Mr. Owens’ responsibilities with Swire have encompassed $3 billion in projects throughout Hong Kong and the states of Florida, Hawaii and Texas. Prior to rejoining Swire Properties in the United States in 1992, Owens spent two years with Swire Properties Ltd in the company’s Hong Kong headquarters where he was involved in the development of 680 residential units, two five-star hotels and 1.4 million square feet of commercial properties. He now oversees Swire’s Brickell CityCentre, an urban mixed-use development of 5.4 million square feet on three city blocks.

Patrick CarrollPat Carroll, Founder & CEO, Carroll Organization

Patrick Carroll is the founder and CEO of Carroll Organization, one of the country’s leading privately held real estate companies focused on multifamily investment and management. Patrick started his career in 2004, forming P. Carroll Properties and investing in residential properties. Following multiple successful investments, Patrick developed residential communities within the southeast. In 2008, Patrick sold his development deals and acquired three property management companies, which have purchased and developed over $900 million in real estate. Patrick is a supporter of the UGA Terry College of Business Alumni Association and a member of Peachtree Presbyterian Church. He is involved with Dan Uggla’s Diamonds in the Rough Foundation, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and the Boys & Girls Club.

Brian EarleBrian Earle, Partner, ARES Management

Mr. Earle has been associated with Ares Management and its predecessor companies AREA Property Partners and Apollo Real Estate Advisors since 2000. Mr. Earle is responsible for new investments and investment management. From 1996 to 2000, Brian worked for Charlesbank Capital Partners/Harvard Private Capital Group making investments on behalf of the Harvard University Endowment. From 1993 to 1996, he worked for Copley Real Estate Advisors on the Developmental Properties Account. Mr. Earle graduated with a BS in Business Administration, concentrating in finance, from Boston University.

Chris AikenChris Aiken, Director, Blackrock

Chris Aiken, Director, is a member of BlackRock’s Real Estate Equity Transactions Group. He is responsible for acquisitions and dispositions in the Southeastern US. Prior to moving to his current role in 2011, Mr. Aiken oversaw direct property acquisitions and joint ventures for all property types in New Jersey and the Philadelphia metropolitan area. Previously, Mr. Aiken was also part of a team responsible for sourcing and maintaining joint venture partner relationships that originated over $2.5 billion of acquisition and development volume in major markets throughout United States. He joined SSR Realty Advisors, a predecessor firm, in August 2004. Prior to joining BlackRock, Mr. Aiken was an Analyst in the Investment Banking Division of Salomon Smith Barney, where he worked with companies in paper and forest products and financial institutions.

Steven DeFrancisSteven DeFrancis, Chief Executive Officer, Cortland Partners

Steven DeFrancis founded Cortland Partners in 2004. He specializes in complex multifamily development and management, specific to neighborhood revitalization and positive economic development. For two decades, DeFrancis has successfully acquired, managed, developed and revitalized multifamily properties in the Southeast. He builds on extensive political and business relationships to profitably execute on every business opportunity. Prior to founding Cortland Partners, in 1995, DeFrancis cofounded Capitol Development Group, a development company who developed over 6000 units of affordable housing units across the southeastern United States. Prior to 1995, DeFrancis served as president and owner of Capitol Realty, an Atlanta real estate brokerage and property management firm. To date, his team at Cortland has managed the investment of more than $8 billion in multifamily properties, representing more than 85,000 units.

Michael LyndMichael Lynd, CEO & CIO, Lynd Development Partners

Mr. Lynd is currently one of the largest 3rd party multifamily managers in the United States with approximately 35,000 units under management. Lynd is an active investor ($250MM in new acquisitions in the last 12 months) and developer ($300MM currently under development) in multifamily. Lynd has also created verticals where it invests in hospitality and commercial property having recently acquired the Hancock Tower in Chicago. Lynd’s platform currently spans 20 states with regional offices in Denver and Miami. Mr. Lynd has structured the acquisition and financing of over $1 billion of real estate acquisition and development projects. He has been involved in the multifamily business for over 18 years as an owner and operator of multifamily communities.

Charles DavisCharles Davis, Regional Director, Met Life Real Estate Investors

Mr. Davis has worked 17 years in Real Estate Investments that is composed of 9 years as Regional Director and 8 years as Mortgage Team Leader all in Tampa, FL. He is responsible for implementing MetLife’s Real Estate Investment’s strategy for Florida and Puerto Rico. Standard real estate functions include all aspects of equity and mortgage investing such as portfolio management, origination, development and disposition of commercial real estate. Mr. Davis has additional responsibilities of developing and managing the Tampa staff of twelve (12) persons and he also participates in MetLife’s planning processes.

James CostelloJames Costello, Managing Director – Americas Research, CBRE

Jim Costello joined CBRE in 1994 with economic and real estate research experience developed through work with government agencies in the Chicago area. In his 18 years of experience at CBRE, Jim has worked with the Global Corporate Services team in Chicago, the Econometric Advisors (EA) team in Boston and now the America’s Research team. In his time with EA, Jim managed the office and industrial models and broadened EA’s analytical capability by integrating the forecast results into more direct applications related to investor questions on asset values. Jim currently manages the Investment Research team within America’s Research. This group delivers investment opinions and insights to institutional investors with the aim of helping them develop a “house view” on the investment opportunities presented by commercial real estate.

Jeff GoldbergJeff Goldberg, Managing Partner, Milestone Group

Jeffrey Goldberg is a Managing Partner of Milestone and co‐chairman of Milestone’s Investment Committee. The Milestone Group is a leading national real estate investment firm with over $2.5 billion of assets under management, with corporate offices in New York City, NY and Dallas, TX. Through its affiliated entities, Milestone Apartments REIT, a publicly traded open‐ended trust on the Toronto Stock Exchange and Milestone Management, a wholly owned property management subsidiary of Milestone Apartments REIT, Milestone currently manages over 36,000 units located in 12 states with 11 regional management and acquisition offices employing approximately 900 professionals nationwide.

Max PeekMaxwell Peek, Senior Vice President, Waterton Associates

Mr. Peek is Senior Vice President of Acquisitions with Waterton Residential. Throughout his tenure at Waterton Mr. Peek has been responsible for the acquisition and disposition of over $1 Billion in multifamily properties nationwide, including equity and debt level transactions. Currently, Mr. Peek oversees investment activity in the Eastern region in the United States.
 
 

Mark HafnerMark Hafner, Senior Managing Director, Greystar Real Estate Partners

Mr. Hafner is responsible for leading Greystar’s international businesses and for its multifamily acquisitions, dispositions and asset management for the Eastern U.S. During his tenure with Greystar, Mr. Hafner has led the acquisition of over $3.0 Billion of multifamily properties. Greystar is a fully integrated company offering expertise in multifamily management, development and investment. Headquartered in Charleston, S.C., Greystar has invested over $4.0 billion in multifamily investments since its inception and currently manages over 200,000 units with a team of over 5,000 employees. Prior to joining Greystar in 2004, Mr. Hafner worked with Merck & Co. and Clear Channel Communications.

Matt AllenMatt Allen, Chief Operating Officer, Related Group of Florida

Matthew Allen is Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of The Related Group. Mr. Allen, who joined the company in 1999, is responsible for overseeing the day to day operations of the Company. In addition, he directly oversees the finance, acquisition, human resources, marketing, legal, accounting, asset management and property management divisions. Since 1999, he was directly responsible for raising over $10 billion in equity and debt. Prior to joining Related, Mr. Allen served as Senior Vice President of Atlantic Gulf Communities. Mr. Allen has over twenty-six years of experience in Real Estate.

Cristina SullivanCristina Sullivan, Executive Vice President, Gables Residential

Cristina Sullivan is the Executive Vice President at Gables Residential. Cris leads the national marketing, leasing and management functions that service the wholly owned, joint venture and third-party owned portfolios for both residential and retail operations. The 35,000 + unit portfolio, which consists of over 50% fee managed assets, are located in 20 markets. The assets include traditional garden style communities, mid-rise, high rise and mixed use deals. In addition, she oversees the facilities management department, and she and her team work in conjunction with Gables Residential’s investment and development groups on all new developments.

Richard MartinezRichard Martinez, Vice President, Freddie Mac

Rich Martinez is the Vice President – Production & Sales for Freddie Mac’s Multifamily South East Regional Production & Sales group, located in McLean, VA, which covers District of Columbia and 12 states, including: Delaware, Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas and Tennessee. Rich manages a staff of 14 people who are responsible for marketing Freddie Mac’s Multifamily programs, quoting / pricing loans submitted for purchase and making investment decisions on whether to purchase the Multifamily loans. In addition, Rich oversees Freddie Mac’s Senior Housing and Student Housing Programs. Annual production in the SE region has averaged over $ 4.75 billion for the last several years, with volume in 2012 exceeding $9.0 billion.

Yamal Yidios CharYamal Yidios Char, President & CEO, Y-Tech International

Yamal Yidios Char is the founder and CEO of Ytech International. Since 2005, Ytech has invested in approximately 5,000 multi-family apartments totaling more than $250 million. The company’s investment profile includes the acquisition of residential developments in need of significant remodeling and repositioning. The majority of the company’s current holdings are concentrated in southeast Florida, however, the company is expanding as well. From 2004 to 2005, he worked with Atkins Engineers and M2E Consulting Engineers as a Project Manager performing consulting work in construction defect mitigation, scheduling, plan reviews, owner representation, condo conversion engineering evaluations and financial assessment for multimillion dollar condominiums in South Florida.

Tim PetersonTim Peterson, Chief Financial Officer, Altman Companies

Timothy A. Peterson joined The Altman Companies in 2003 as a Partner and Chief Financial Officer. He is responsible for managing all of the equity and debt relationships as well as overseeing the accounting, reporting, tax, MIS and personnel functions for the entities that make up The Altman Companies. Tim has over 25 years of real estate experience and over 18 years of multifamily experience. Previously, he was the Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of a real estate investment trust (REIT) that developed, acquired, managed and leased industrial and office properties in the Eastern United States.

Michael GingMichael Ging, Managing Director, Alliance Residential Company

Mr. Ging joined Alliance Residential in 2007 as the Managing Director for the Florida Division and is responsible for all new development and acquisition activity throughout the State of Florida. Within the last 3 years, Alliance has closed on over $300 million in new development projects in Florida and is currently under construction in South Florida with two new projects. Mr. Ging has 25 years of industry experience — including acquiring and financing more than $200 million in assets and developing 6,000 multifamily units worth over $750 million — Most recently, Mr. Ging served as President of Silverstone Communities in Florida.

Zach GoldmanZach Goldman, Director of Operations, TGM Associates

Zach Goldman is the Director of Operations and Partner of TGM Associates, a New York City based investment advisory firm that specializes in multifamily real estate throughout the United States. Goldman joined TGM in 2007, after working for a national residential developer, where he was responsible for the entitlement, planning and development of mixed-use communities. As Director of Operations, Mr. Goldman is responsible for managing and overseeing TGM’s day-to-day multifamily operations, which include marketing, leasing, maintenance, construction, energy management, training, and human resources. Zach is involved in the implementation of new business strategies developed to maximize the value of TGM’s operating assets.

Peter LewisPeter Lewis, President, Wharton Equity Partners

Mr. Lewis is Chairman, President and a founder of Wharton Equity Partners. Since its inception in 1987, he has overseen the expansion of the firm’s investment reach in the areas of real estate and private equity. Regarding its real estate activities, Wharton Equity plays an active role in the transactions it undertakes. With roots in large scale residential development, as well as the ownership of various asset types from office, hotels, and apartments to self-storage, the firm combines in-depth operational experience, with institutional capital markets sophistication. Mr. Lewis recently spearheaded the launch of the firm’s multi-family strategy with the purchase of over $150.0 million in multifamily properties located primarily in the southeast and central US. In addition, in January of 2013, Wharton Equity expanded its operations into the Miami market with its purchase of a note secured by a 2.2 acre parcel of land in downtown Miami, zoned for a 2 million square foot mixed use project

Jay JacobsonJay Jacobson, President, Stiles Residential

Mr. Jay Jacobson currently serves as president of Stiles Residential Group, the residential development and investment services division. Mr. Jacobson is responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of the division and developing new business opportunities with a primary goal to expand Stiles’ residential presence throughout Florida, North Carolina and beyond. Leveraging Stiles’ existing property pipeline and relationships with partners, investors and financial institutions, Mr. Jacobson has been focusing his initial efforts on developing multifamily properties throughout South Florida – from Palm Beach to Broward and Miami Dade Counties.

Charles BarrusCharles Barrus, Development Director, Wood Partners

Charles Barrus is the regional development director for Wood Partners in the South Region, covering primarily Florida, Georgia, the Carolinas, and southern Virginia. He has development and finance responsibility for all new projects in the South Region. Since 2002, Barrus has been actively involved in the financing, development and disposition of more than 6,000 multifamily units with a total capitalization in excess of $800 million. Before joining Wood Partners in 2002, Barrus worked as a manager in business planning and development for the Walt Disney Company, where his responsibilities included hotel development and transportation strategy. Prior to his current role at Wood Partners, he was a development director for the firm in North Florida.

As a founding member of GoldOller Real Estate Investments, LLC, Jake currently serves as Chief Operating Officer. In this role, he directs new investments for the GoldOller portfolio and oversees management operations for all investments. Jake has 15 years of experience working in real estate investments, acquisitions, development, finance, and management.

Justin ToalJustin Toal, Chief Investment Officer, Fifteen Group

Justin Toal is the Chief Investment Officer and a Senior Principal of Fifteen Group. Mr. Toal oversees the acquisition, development, repositioning, and management of the firm’s nationwide real estate investments. Prior to joining Fifteen Group, Justin served as President of TVT Partners, and was a Managing Partner at Simmons Vedder and Castle Hill Partners, where he opened the firm’s Florida office and supervised the underwriting of more than 700 market-rate and distressed assets, including loans, REO’s, bonds, and debt portfolios. Previously, he was Vice President of Acquisitions for O’Connor Capital Partners in New York, covering major North American markets including Florida, New York, Washington D.C., Mexico City, Boston, Chicago, California, and Texas, and involved in the investment, management, and development of more than $2 billion of real estate transactions. Justin serves on the Alumni Board for the Columbia University Masters Program in Real Estate Development, as well as a member of the Urban Land Institute.

Kendall McEachern Kendall McEachern , Chief Executive Officer, Acentria, Inc.

With a 30-year background in risk management and insurance brokerage for the real estate industry, Kendall has been responsible for approximately 500,000 multi-family/condo units and 7,000,000 square feet of commercial office and retail space. Kendall’s responsibility as CEO is providing daily leadership and direction for the Acentria organization. Additionally, Kendall is one of the largest revenue agents within Acentria and manages multiple clients, insurance programs and coverages.
 
 
 

Robert GivenRobert Given, Vice Chairman, CBRE

Robert Given, Vice Chairman, is a member of the CBRE Institutional Group, CBRE Major Accounts Group, CBRE South Florida Senior Leadership Board, University of Florida’s Real Estate Board, National Multi-Housing. Robert is responsible for co-leading a ten-member team that focuses business primarily in Florida. With a proven track record for successfully participating in the sale, marketing, and consulting of over 300 investment properties, Robert and his team have represented over 85,000 multi-housing units and land transactions, with a value in excess of $12 billion. Among his many accomplishments: the CBRE No. 1 Producer in Florida in 2012, 2011, 2010, and 2009 and, served as a Top 25 CBRE producer in Florida for 8 years. His successes have gone beyond transactions as well. Robert is a benefactor and advocate for several high profile South Florida charities including Dan Marino Foundation, Voices for Children, and Kids at Home, and participates through CBRE’s philanthropic program, CBRE Cares. Prior to joining CBRE, Mr. Given served as President and COO of the Altman Management Company and Director of Dispositions for Altman Development Company.

Greg WestGreg West, Chief Development Officer, ZOM

Mr. Greg West, Chief Development Officer of ZOM, Inc., is responsible all company development activities nationwide. He joined ZOM in 1997 and has since developed over 5,500 multifamily units including more than 175,000 square feet of commercial space with total capitalization of over billion dollars. Mr. West’s experience ranges from suburban garden apartments to complex urban mixed use properties involving multifamily, retail and office. In south Florida ZOM currently has five active developments totaling over 1,500 units and currently has in excess of $600M under construction nationally. Prior to joining ZOM, Mr. West worked in a development capacity for Paragon Group, a REIT specializing in multifamily properties. He was involved in the implementation of new multifamily developments and the repositioning of existing projects in both the Midwest and Florida.

Calum WeaverCalum Weaver, First VP – Private Capital Group, CBRE

Calum joined CBRE in 2000 and is a First Vice President of the Investment Properties division and co-leads the CBRE’s Multi-Housing Private Capital Group which exclusively focuses on the marketing and disposition of multi-housing properties on behalf of private or non institutional owners in South Florida. The typical CBRE Private Client Group deal size is between $1 to $20 million. In the past three years he has successfully sold 50 multi-housing properties totaling over $700 million in South Florida on behalf of his clients. In 2007, Calum founded CBRE’s Multi-Housing Private Capital Group in South Florida. The Group specializes in providing best in class advisory services to private real estate investors, owners and developers.

Kevin RostowskyKevin Rostowsky, Senior Managing Director, NXT Capital

Kevin brings more than 20 years of commercial real estate lending expertise to NXT Capital. He most recently served as Managing Director of Merrill Lynch Capital Real Estate Finance, where he was responsible for opening origination offices in the eastern United States and hiring and managing 20 professionals. Kevin and his team specialized in sourcing and underwriting first mortgage, mezzanine and equity investment opportunities for all property types. Prior to joining Merrill Lynch Capital, Kevin was Director and Team Leader at GE Capital Real Estate and at Heller Financial. He began his career at The Travelers, where he successfully restructured and disposed of a $500 million portfolio of troubled loans.

Larry SloanLarry Sloan, Senior Vice President, Behringer Harvard

Larry R. Sloan serves as senior vice president of development for Behringer Harvard. Mr. Sloan oversees the multifamily development platform and as a senior transactions officer is also responsible for sourcing real estate acquisition and recapitalization opportunities for Behringer Harvard Multifamily REIT I, Inc. Since joining Behringer Harvard, Mr. Sloan has transacted on more than $1 billion of acquisition and development opportunities. Mr. Sloan joined Behringer Harvard in July 2007 after spending nine years in the commercial real estate industry with the Archon Group. In his most recent position with Archon, Mr. Sloan served as acquisitions manager responsible for sourcing opportunities on behalf of Whitehall Street Real Estate funds and their sponsor, Goldman Sachs.

Jay EisnerJay Eisner, Partner, LEM Capital

Mr. Eisner is a founding partner of LEM Capital, a series of private equity funds that is currently focusing on investing in quality, value-add multifamily properties in primary and secondary markets throughout the United States. LEM provides equity and partners with local hands-on real estate companies that are skilled at renovating, repositioning and managing multifamily properties. Since founding LEM in 2001, he has been involved in all aspects of the company’s formation and operations, co-managing LEM’s three existing funds with over $675 million of equity commitments and investments in over $2 billion of real estate equity and debt transactions.

Callum ParrottCallum Parrott, Executive Managing Dir. – Southeast/Florida, Mill Creek Residential Trust

Callum Parrott serves as the Executive Managing Director for Mill Creek Residential Trust LLC’s Southeast Division. Callum is responsible for the development and construction of multifamily communities in the Southeast market. Prior to the MCRT start-up in August 2010, Callum worked in the same capacity with Trammell Crow Residential from 1999 – 2010 where he was responsible for new project development, design and approval for multi-family developments in Georgia and South Florida. During his leadership the division has developed/is developing over 4,100 units with a total capitalization of over $810 Million. Prior to joining Trammell Crow Residential, Callum was a real estate developer for a regional restaurant chain where he was responsible for site acquisition and development in Georgia, North Carolina and Pennsylvania. His prior experience includes three years of property management with Gables Residential in Atlanta.

Kinsey SaleKinsey Sale, Asset Management, JP Morgan Chase

Kinsey Sale, Associate, is an asset manager in J.P. Morgan Asset Management – Global Real Assets’ Multifamily/Alternatives group. An employee of J.P. Morgan since 2006, she is currently responsible for managing a portfolio of development and stabilized residential properties in Pennsylvania, Virginia, the Carolinas, Tennessee, and Southeast Florida. Prior to joining the Global Real Assets group, she was a research analyst at GVA Williams. Kinsey is a member of the Urban Land Institute.
 

Tony DuplisseTony Duplisse, Senior Vice President, Equity Residential

Tony Duplisse is the Senior Vice President of Investments for the Southeast Region of Equity Residential; the largest publicly traded apartment company in America. As Senior Vice President, Tony is responsible for all aspects of EQR’s investment, portfolio and capital project management for the 50 properties (20,000 units) in Atlanta, Orlando and South Florida. With extensive experience in real estate finance and portfolio management, Tony joined EQR in January 1998. Previously, he was a Vice President of Asset Management for Walden Residential Properties Trust where he was responsible for oversight of their 21,000 unit portfolio. In that position, he successfully managed portfolio growth to over 40,000 units and coordinated their ancillary income initiatives.

Grant has shared his sales and business expertise as a motivational speaker and author of four books: Sell or Be Sold; The Closers Survival Guide; If You’re Not First, You’re Last; andThe 10X Rule. As a professional real estate investor, Cardone has bought and sold over 2,500 units in property markets across the United States including San Diego, CA. Austin, TX, Charlotte, NC, and Florida. In 2012, Cardone made the largest individual multi-family real estate transaction in the state of Florida and believes multi family properties are an excellent, stable, dependable long-term investment.

Gerard YetmingGerard Yetming, Senior Vice President, CBRE

Mr. Yetming joined CBRE in 2002. His current role involves the responsibility for the strategic positioning, financial underwriting and market analysis of CBRE listed multi-housing assets. During his tenure with CBRE, he has been involved in over $6.4 billion of multi-family assignments, representing over 52,000 units. Mr. Yetming was previously Chief Investment Officer for The Federated Companies, a national real estate investment group that developed and managed over 7,500 units of residential housing with an aggregate value of over $1.5 billion. Mr. Yetming has also founded several successful businesses including a real estate brokerage, a business brokerage and a maintenance service company. Prior to this, Gerard was the President and Chief Financial Officer of JuniorNet, a 125-employee Internet company based in Boston.​
